Las Vegas inmate who died while incarcerated has been identified as Uber driver accused of raping a passenger sleeping

An inmate who had died last month while incarcerated has been identified as the Uber driver who was accused of raping a sleeping passenger.

The Clark County coroner’s office had identified Dawed Mekonene, 30, saying that he died by suicide.

Mekonene originally was taken to University Medical Center after being found unresponsive by a corrections officer while being on cell watch at around 6:30pm. He died at 3 days later. Metro, who operates the jail had said that the man tied a sheet around his neck. He had been booked there since December 20th, 2021 on several counts of sexual assault, kidnapping, and battery by strangulation to commit a sexual assault, according to Metro.

Mekonene had been working as an Uber driver when according to police, he raped a female passenger who had fallen asleep in his vehicle on December 16th.
