Police are urging the public to be vigilant and alert when using rideshare services after a fake driver was arrested for sexual assault in Los Angeles. The suspect, identified as Nicolas Morales, allegedly posed as a driver for multiple rideshare services and assaulted seven women between October 2016 and January 2018.
Morales was arrested in February 2018 after a thorough police investigation linked him to a string of sexual assaults. He has been charged with 27 felony counts, including rape, sodomy, and burglary. If convicted, Morales could face a maximum sentence of 300 years to life in state prison.
According to the police, Morales targeted women who were alone and appeared to be under the influence of alcohol. After convincing them that he was their designated driver, Morales would allegedly sexually assault them inside the vehicle.
In light of this case, law enforcement agencies are stressing the importance of being cautious while using rideshare services. Riders are advised to verify the driver’s name, photograph, and vehicle make and model before entering the car, and to share their trip details with friends or family members. Additionally, passengers should trust their instincts and leave the vehicle immediately if they feel unsafe.
The case also highlights the need for rideshare companies to enhance their security measures and for local authorities to closely monitor any suspicious activity related to such services. This is crucial in order to protect the public from potential dangers and ensure a safe and reliable transportation experience for all users.
