Uber Driver Accused of Sexually Assaulting Sleeping Passenger in Southern California Lawsuit

A lawsuit has been filed against Uber Technologies Inc. by a woman who claims that she was sexually assaulted by a driver in 2021 after falling asleep in the back seat of his car. The woman, who is identified only as Jane EN Doe in the lawsuit filed in Beverly Hills Superior Court, had summoned the ride-hailing service because she felt it was too unsafe to drive herself after drinking with friends. The suit alleges sexual battery and assault, gender violence, intentional infliction of emotional distress and negligence, and seeks unspecified compensatory and punitive damages.

According to the lawsuit, Uber’s response to the issue of sexual assault and rape of female passengers has been inadequate. The suit alleges that since 2014, thousands of female passengers have been subjected to unlawful sexual misconduct at the hands of Uber drivers, including rape, sexual assault, and physical violence.

The company’s safety features, such as the ability for riders to reach emergency authorities and trip monitors, are highlighted on their website and in a video.
